Choice 1

Write a letter to Peg Kehret, the author of Small Steps. Tell her what you liked best about the book and ask her any questions that you have about this time in her life. Be sure to use the correct format for a friendly letter.

Read about another woman who overcame polio, Wilma Rudolph by reading Wilma Unlimited: How Wilma Rudolph Became the World's Fastest Woman. (B Rud) Write 1 or 2 paragraphs sharing what you learn about Wilma and her battle with the disease.

Choice 3

Imagine that you are Peg and that you keep a diary. Write an entry for that diary for one of the following days:

· The day that Peg found out she might have to rely on an iron lung to help her breathe
· The day that Peg returned to the Sheltering Arms after her difficult first visit home
